Being Jazmine by Cecily Paterson – Book Review!

Cecily Paterson’s new book ‘Being Jazmine’ is released today! ‘Being Jazmine’ is #3 in the Invisible novels after ‘Invisible’ and ‘Invincible’.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, so I am going to do just that.

To be completely truthful I didn’t like ‘Invincible’ (#2). I found It a bit boring and cliche, so originally I had decided that ‘Invisible’ (#1) was better as a stand alone novel. Then I received ‘Being Jazmine’ as an ARC and I got excited when I read the blurb. I will give you guys a little synopsis now;

Jazmine has never been ‘normal’, and now her life is changing too, it’s becoming anything but normal. Her mum is getting married and they are moving to a bigger, suburban house. But then while her mum is on her honeymoon, Jazmine sees a group of teenagers on a beach, not being ‘normal’ but being themselves and comfortable, speaking Auslan. She decides she needs to go on a camp, an Auslan speaking camp, to see if she can fit into a different kind of ‘normal’. Yet how will she keep balance in her life, between her new friends, old friends and her family?

I loved this book, It was interesting in the way it explored the Auslan speaking community. In some ways, I didn’t expect the perspectives some of the Auslan speaking characters held although I did understand the more I read. ‘Being Jazmine’ delve into common teenage issues like friendships and family relationships, except it was unique in the way that Jazmine’s ‘problem’, her hard of hearing, influenced these relationships.

This book was very clean and it didn’t really have as much a romantic aspect as the other two books, which I thought was refreshing because it allowed the reader to reflect on the bigger themes, which I talked about above.

I would seriously recommend this book to anyone, it was a gorgeous story.
